The Emerald Isle: Is the Grass Really Greener in Ireland?

Blog hero banner

When you imagine Ireland, what comes to mind?

Is it bright green fields, four-leaf clovers, and too many sheep to count? Or a €6 flat white from Insomnia while waiting for a delayed DART? There’s no wrong answer, but we suspect you probably chose the first.

To outsiders, the Irish countryside has become almost synonymous with the country itself – and for good reason. It’s lush, dramatic, and brilliantly green.

People say the grass is always greener on the other side – in other words, that other places and situations always seem better than your own. But Ireland isn’t nicknamed the Emerald Isle for nothing.

Today we’re answering the question: Is the grass really greener in Ireland?🍀

William Drennan⛰️

You can’t walk through Ireland’s green fields without wandering into Irish poetry. The phrase Emerald Isle comes from Irish poet William Drennan, a physician and political thinker from Belfast.

Drennan’s 1795 poem, When Erin First Rose, includes one of the earliest references to Ireland as the Emerald Isle:

“Let no feeling of vengeance presume to defile

The cause of, or men of, the Emerald Isle.”

In simple English: “Don’t let feelings of revenge hurt Ireland’s cause or the people of the Emerald Isle”.

The significance of green in Ireland is not only about landscape, but also national identity and pride. An emerald is a valuable gemstone often linked with renewal, growth, and hope – much more meaningful and glamorous than ‘the green isle.’

Rain, Sea, and Soil 🌧️

Poetry may have given Ireland its nickname, but science helps explain the colour.

Thanks to moist air blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland gets plenty of rain. It also has a mild climate, with winters not too cold and summers rarely very hot. These conditions mean grass can grow for longer throughout the year, and combined with Ireland’s rich and fertile soil, create the green countryside people associate with the Emerald Isle.

So... Is the Grass Really Greener? 🍃

Yes... and no.

Ireland is full of rolling green hills, dramatic cliffs, and beautiful coastlines, but it’s also a real place, not a postcard. It’s not all sunshine and scenic walks (although there’s plenty of that).

Like anywhere, there are rainy days and rush-hour traffic, but when the clouds lift and the countryside glows green, it’s easy to see why the name has lasted for centuries.
