Love Halloween but hate feeling scared? You’re not alone.
Luckily, London is full of magical spots to celebrate Spooky Season – without the jump scares. From spellbinding shops to strange museums and hidden forests just a train ride away, here’s our guide to the city’s cosiest haunts. ✨
Grab your broomstick, don your witchiest outfit, and sip a hot Butterbeer latte at the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studios. Whether or not you’re a Potter fan, the tour oozes Halloween magic – especially in autumn, when the Great Hall glows with hundreds of floating pumpkins and dark enchantments linger around every corner. It’s the cosiest day out you can have without staying in.
Whether you’re a modern witch, folklore lover, or really into Romantasy – London’s got you covered. Stock up on everything from spellbooks to Shadow Sauce and tarot decks for a truly bewitching Halloween.
Head to Treadwell’s Books in Bloomsbury for shelves stacked high with books on witchcraft, mythology, and folklore – alongside incense, tarot readings, lectures, and pretty much everything magical.
Less of a bookworm and more interested in actual worms? Hoxton Street Monster Supplies is pure whimsical chaos, mixing a love for the gross and supernatural with a wicked sense of humour. Think Tinned Fear, Salt Made from Tears of Laughter, and even writing kits that let you send (and receive!) letters from a werewolf. This shop really commits to the bit.
The Viktor Wynd Museum is difficult to explain – and that’s half the fun. As the website proudly declares, “no attempt is made at classification”. This anti-museum is a treasure trove of the weird and wonderful, thanks to the owner’s... shall we say, eccentric tastes.
Enter through its black and white doors and you’ll find dodo bones, mermaid skeletons, magic pebbles, and even an Absinthe Parlour, voted Best Bar in London in 2019. Thought you found museums boring and overly academic? Think again.
Just 90 minutes from central London lies the New Forest National Park, where wild ponies roam through ancient woodland and open heathland. It’s straight out of a fairytale – especially in autumn, when the trees blaze gold and copper. Look out for pigs snuffling among fallen acorns, a centuries-old tradition called pannage, found nowhere else in the UK.
Step inside Hans & Gretel in Camden for another real-life fairytale experience. Decorated with giant sweets and storybook trees that stretch across the ceiling, it’s a sugar-dusted dreamland serving clouds of candyfloss, bubble waffles, and mounds of creamy gelato. It’s the ultimate Halloween treat without any tricks.
