☀️CULTURAL SPOTLIGHT: British Summer Time (BST)

On the 29th of March, the UK will travel to the future—sort of.

Actually, it’s less time travel and more logistics. This is the start of British Summer Time (BST), also known as Daylight Saving Time. The clocks go forward by one hour, giving people lighter evenings from March to October.

The idea was first proposed in 1784, but it wasn’t introduced in the UK until 1916, to help save energy and boost productivity during the First World War. Today, it simply means more daylight after school or work, with peak summer seeing the sun set as late as 9pm.

Ever wanted to stand at the centre of time? Just a few minutes from our English Centre, you can step onto the world-famous Prime Meridian Line in Greenwich Park and straddle two hemispheres at once.
