September marks the official start of autumn in the UK and Ireland, which means it’s time for a new round of seasonal phrases to add to your vocabulary.

While the leaves haven’t yet exploded into bursts of red and gold, why not celebrate the beginning of the cosiest season with our collection of autumnal phrases? 🍂🧤

1) Turn Over a New Leaf 🍁

Meaning: To make a fresh start or change your behaviour for the better.

It’s time to leave your bad study habits behind and turn over a new leaf. No more cramming!

2) A Nip in the Air ❄️

Meaning: A slight, refreshing chill or coldness in the weather.

September is perfect for a walk in the woods, but it can get a little nippy.

3) Out of the Woods 🌲

Meaning: No longer in a difficult or dangerous situation.

If you’ve finished your exams, you’re finally out of the woods. Time to celebrate!

4) To Squirrel Away 🐿️

Meaning: To save or store something for later.

It’s a good idea to squirrel away some treats in your desk drawer for when you need a little pick-me-up.

5) Fall into Place🍃

Meaning: Events happen in a good way without problems, or a confusing situation suddenly makes sense.

At first, studying abroad might feel overwhelming. But give it some time and everything will start to fall into place.

6) The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far from the Tree 🍎

Meaning: Someone has similar qualities or behaviours to their parents.

If your parents studied languages, too, you might say that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

7) To be Nuts about Something 🌰

Meaning: Like or enjoy something intensely.

You don’t have to be nuts about English to enjoy studying it. The key is finding the right content and methods – or maybe just a shiny new pen.

8) Sweater Weather 🧶

Meaning: Cool weather suitable for wearing a sweater or jumper.

It’s officially sweater weather, so dig out your favourite jumper and prepare for approximately six months of Great British drizzle.

9) Reap what you sow 🌾

Meaning: Experience the results of your actions.

If you put work into improving your English, you’ll reap what you sow!

10) Cosy Up ☕

Meaning: Make yourself comfortable and warm.

When the temperature drops, there’s nothing better than cosying up with a hot mug of tea and your favourite book – preferably with a thick blanket.
